These songs play automatically... sometimes they just need a second to buffer.
March of the Spookies
July 2009
A short, "spooky" little piece for full orchestra.
At Water's Edge
June 2009
This is a very dramatic trailer-esque piece for a short video made by Greenlight Films.
I had originally written it with purely orchestral instruments but they wanted it to be more rock sounding, so I went back and added electric guitars and rock beats. Fun stuff.
Dirt Tango
August 2009
Another short piece, inspired by one of my good friends, Maria Dance, who is the talented violinist on this recording.
We had the opportunity to get a few minutes of recording time in a top-notch studio, so I wrote this piece the night before, and it was a ton of fun.
Frames of Mind
Summer 2008
This is a short demo that I made a little bit ago. It covers a wide scope of musical styles so as to show a little bit of the diversity of my writing skills.
The Swim
May 2009
I wrote this piece for a promotional video about the BYU Swim Team.
It's a great little commercial with tons of really cool underwater footage.
Altar Intro
This is the intro I wrote for a film called Altar, which was made for the 48-hour film festival in Salt Lake City.
It was 7 minutes of music, and I had about 5 hours to do it. For those of you unfamiliar, that's FAST. It's fun to do but it hurts to turn out work that could have been a bit better if there was more time to get it done...
1 For 4 Theme
This is the theme that I wrote for the 48-hour film festival in New Hampshire. My team made a film about a man who dies, and comes back as a ghost to observe the lives of those to whom his organs were donated.
Kind of an introspective thing.
It's fun to do but the time restraints are insane. I had about 4 hours to write 6 minutes of music.
Waltz
This started out as an improvisation that I played for a modern dance class. Then it turned into a story-time waltz, which then turned into a french acoordian solo which then turned into an intense battle theme.
It happens.
Lies
January 2009
A little suspense piece for strings and winds.
The Very Thought
July 2008
This is an arrangement for full orchestra, with a great deal of original material included. The theme is an old hymn written by John B. Dykes, entitled "Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee."
Nearer
August 2008
This was another arrangement for the full orchestra and choir. It's a popular hymn, written over 150 years ago by Lowell Mason, entitled "Nearer My God, To Thee."
I felt I could express it in a new way, so here it is.
Orchestral Works
Mr. Planter
Music: Heather Neeley,
Stephen Anderson
Lyrics: Heather Neeley
Produced by Stephen Anderson
Heather Neeley, vocals
Stephen Anderson, piano
Jake Hawken, drums
This is a fun little song that Heather wrote a little while ago. We were in a song-writing class together and she wrote this as an assignment, and I liked it. But then we sort of forgot about it for a while until recently(2 years later), I asked her if she still remembered it because I wanted to record and produce it.
And then of course while I was in the process of mixing it I got a little carried away with electronic sounds, and then a little more carried away with recording my own voice and editing it to where it's scarcely comprehensible. That's what musicians do for fun when they're bored.
Special thanks to Jake for playing the drums.
Come Along
I learned something new with this one.
Heather had written the chorus to a song, but hadn't yet come up with any verses. I too had come up with a chorus and no verses to my own song.
So what did we do?
As it turns out, the way to make a really great collaborationg is to forget about verses and just come up with two choruses and put them together. You get rid of all the fluffery and just have a song full of only the catchy stuff.
This one was fun to produce.
Just A Girl
Music and Lyrics: Heather Neeley,
Stephen Anderson, vocals
This is the first recording of me playing the guitar. Obviously it's not really my instrument, but I'm proud of myself for playing all three of those notes!
I don't have a whole lot to say about this one, except that is was the first song in which I really started to experiment with electronic sounds.
I just created the whole song straight through, fully produced it, without any words and then sent it to Heather to write some lyrics to it.
It Looks Nice
I decided to include the first verse, and chorus:
Verse 1:
No food or drink please, and try to keep your voices really small. There's other people in this world who coexist, and that is all.
The world looks square and flat to me, but still a circle it will be from far away and looking down, and they say that it goes around.
Chorus:
What's this called love? All I know is it looks nice. I've almost been there once or twice. It always hurts to get so close, and fall, fall down. And still they say, "It makes the world go round."
Music and Lyrics: Stephen Anderson
I'm Just A Fool
Music and Lyrics: Heather Neeley
Todd Schwartzman, vocals
This is a cute little duet that Heather wrote. She asked me to accompany her and her friend, Todd, when they performed it and I liked it a lot. So I decided to record it.
What More Is There To Say?
This one has been a big hit for me. And by that I mean that all 40 or 50 people that have heard it really like it....
Actually my older brother used this one as the slow dance at his wedding reception a little bit ago. Kinda cool.
I wrote it in between classes one day while sitting on a bench out in the snow.
A Minute Or Two
Josh Rich, vocals
Dave Lemke, bass
Josh Gishi, guitar
I felt it necessary to include this one in the playlist as it is the first real song that I ever wrote.
It was for a good friend of mine that lived next door to me, named Cherie. It pretty much speaks for itself.
Songs
Imagine - Remix
I had some free time one night, and so I sat down and recorded the very first thing that came into my head. This is it.
I spent a grand total of 4 hours on it, start to finish. 8pm to midnight.
Excuse Me
I did this one more for fun than anything. It's a montage of electronic noises put to a DnB type feel.
And of course I decided to record myself on it, trying to be as ridiculous as possible. As always.
Music
March 2009
I'm very proud of this piece, though this recording does not do it justice. It's a piano quintet with 5.1 surround electronics as an accompaniment.
It was performed live at the end of March 2009, and it was a big hit. There is a video of the live performance on the "Short Films" page.
It's Not You, It's Me
Fall 2006
There's a couple seconds of silence at the beginning of this one, so give it a sec to start.
I decided to post this one because it's not so much "music", but rather it is intended to be in the tradition of classical composition, in the electronic genre.
In other words, it's intended to be avant garde.
The first electronic pieces of "music" were nothing more than a conglomeration of different sounds, with no beat at all.
And that's what this is.
It was originally created in 5.1 surround, but mixed down to stereo for this purpose.
Electronic Music
"Kiwi"
This is a short animation that I found on YouTube.
I asked the animator if I could have a copy of it so I could write different music to it, and of course he agreed.
The music was recorded live at Soularium Studios in Alpine.
"Time
Lapse"
This is an amazing collection of time lapse videos that I found and really loved and was inspired by, so I decided I would write some music to it.
"Sacred
Sauce"
Someone in Texas sent me this clip so that I would write music to it and then they could decide if they liked me enough to write for their full length film...for free.
They didn't sepcify what kind of feel they wanted so I decided to go with a serious, non-sappy approach.
This is a modern dance choreographed and filmed by Robin Conie. Some of the music was cut out when the film was edited due to issues with the footage, or something like that, so there are a couple parts that got left out. Oh well.
I wrote the music to the dance, not the film, and it was performed in the Fall of 2008.
"Undercut"
"Backstage
Pass"
I really don't have much to say about this one. It's short. It was fun.
I did the music and the sound effects.
"Music"
This is the live performance of a piece that I wrote called "Music".
It's a piano quintet with 5.1 surround sound electronics that I programmed to go with it.
Naturally the awesomeness of the surround sound is lost here because this is just a recording that my friend made with his video camera, but you can get the idea.
It was a lot of fun and the audience loved it.
There's an easier-to-listen-to recording of it on my "electronic music" page.
Short
Films
Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Stephen Anderson began writing music at age 11. Having been interested in film scoring from an early age, he began composing for short films and commercials during his teenage years, and was later accepted into the Music Composition program at the Brigham Young University School of Music in Provo, Utah, where he graduated in April 2009.
Stephen has experience in composition as well as songwriting and recording.
Although he has always been primarily interested in composing, he is also an accomplished pianist and has performed with the Evergreen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Brigham Young University Men's Chorus, and has spent years accompanying the modern dance classes at BYU.
Stephen's main focus has always been in orchestral music, though he has experience writing in nearly all genres, and has also been involved in many collaborative songwriting projects and hopes to take part in more songwriting in the future while making a career in film scoring.
Apart from composing, Stephen has also spent a significant amount of time transcribing music both for individuals and businesses, as well as working as a copyist and editor for the BYU Choral Department.
